Dick Rijken

Professor, director of Steim, NR

Urban media: for citizens, with citizens, by citizens​
 

Rijken is currently a professor of IT and Society at The Hague Unversity of Applied Sciences, director of Steim, a network lab for sound art and electronic live performance, and member of the supervisory board of Design Academy Eindhoven.

 

Dick Rijken has done research and also worked for Dutch broadcasting organisation VPRO (part of the public broadcasting system) on the relationship between formal institutions such as broadcasters, museums, libraries and archives on the one hand, and audiences on the other, with a strong emphasis on mutual participation and collaboration.
 

He has also experimented with different kinds of field labs. At the moment he is the director ot Steim (steim.org), a lab for sound art and electronic performance. Currently he is developing a methodology for networked innovation that uses three conceptual levels: 1. values, 2. organisation/framing, and 3. concrete interventions. Currently, his research focuses on the use of media and participation processes in cities.
